Need help figuring out what engine I'm working on

Hello, I'm helping a buddy work on a GS1000 with serial #128788. The motor is stuffed into a GS 750 frame & runs well. Our plan is to scrap the frame, it's been cut & welded to the point it's dangerous to ride. I haven't had much luck in figuring out what year it is. Any data bases out there? can anyone help? I have a chart showing that 1979 engine numbers started at 121074 so I guess that makes yours a '79.

Thank you, most of my experience has been working on Honda's & have built up a pretty good database, when it came to the Suzuki wasn't sure where to look. Now I can search the forums for answers to my questions-Patrick

Is it a 2 valve motor, What carbs are on it VM carbs would be 78-79 year

Yup, 2 valve motor & VM carbs. Supposedly bored out to 1100cc's by previous owner & then stuffed into a '79 GS750 frame. Lot's of washers to take up the space between frame & motor. As it sits It's too dangerous to ride so our plan was to put it into a custom frame. I say was because my buddy got it running today & it's blowing alot of white smoke. At least it was cheap, I'm now waiting to find out what he wants to do w/ it, we might rebuild it & use it. Thanks for the info- Patrick
