I'm so ashamed!

I did something a while back that was really stupid. I was installing my new electronic ignition onto my '79 gs750E. I got the points cover off and was trying to figure out how to remove the bolt that holds the lobe onto the drive shaft (I think that's the name of the part) - because of the accumulated dirt and grime it looked like there was only one bolt rather than two holding the lobe on. I proceeded to try and turn this bolt counter-clockwise, which of course just turned the ignition lobe. So I tried doing this with the rear brake on so that the shaft didn't turn. I had to use a lot of force and felt a few successive "slips" as I gave it pressure. Of course, at this point I realized that there were two (an outer and an inner) bolts holding the lobe on the shaft. I cursed the crappy instructions of the ignition manufacturer and feared my bike was done for. But i pressed on and followed the instructions - the result was that for proper timing the adjustable ignition sensors had to be positioned all the way to the left (or the right, can't recall which). But the bike still runs pretty good. My question is, can I do the reverse of my mistake and turn the larger bolt clockwise while holding the rear brake, then reset the timing, or is this even necessary? I'm afraid of damaging the bike but want to get the best timing possible.

Unless you bent something in the timing advance mech ? It shouldn't change. Pull athe advance unit out & check it. You may have broken the advance weights

There are 2 teeth the larger bolt fits on so you can install/remove the governor without turning over the crankshaft. Perhaps those broke or the nut just slipped a bit?

When installing a Dyna S ignition in my 550 the screws are all the way to one side of the slot. Heard this is normal and as long as you can get the timing correct, there is no problem.
