I recently purchased a 82 GS550M to learn how to ride on. When I bought it it was running but the intake boots were completly ruined, clutch cable needed to be replaced, petcock needed to be rebuilt along with some other small problems to be adressed. I have since taken her apart and fixed/replaced everything I have just listed. Only problem now is that she won't start (details I know). When I tried to start the bike it refused to start and went as far as backfiring in protest. My initial thought is that the previus owner richened the fuel mixture to compensate for it sucking air. Any alternative theories or suggestions on how I might go about fixing this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How clean are the carbs? GS carbs need to be surgically clean and sealed with fresh o-rings or the bike will not run right.Ed

They looked pristine to my inexperienced eye, took special care to make sure nothing got in them while they were off the bike. I'm hoping to minimize downtime so I'm hoping I won't have to bite the bullet and rebuild the carbs (Hell with that airbox on this thing I'm really hoping I won't have to take the carbs off the bike).Comment

Hate to rain on your parade. I hated to have to pull my carbs off. I absolutely despised it. Sure my carbs are clean, they even shine. However, what I didn't see, was on the inside. Dirty, gummed, and all kinds of nasties living in there. Jets were plugged, o-rings disintergrated, and the whole damn thing needed a complete rebuild.
It isn't that hard to do, and the o-rings are cheap. GS resources has the info on carb rebuilding...with PICTURES! Pretty easy and step by step. I got an 80 gs550e, and it is really important to get the carbs set up right. 4 carbs, 4 cylinders, 4 exhausts and all can be intimidating, but yah got to go thru it, if you want to ride.
1.)Rebuild your carbs, get all the o-rings replaced.
2.)Replace your spark plugs
3.)Open up your ignition point cover and clean the contact areas. No doubt you have a signal generator in there, so clean that up so it shines.
4.)Buy a good manuel, it will prove to be invaluable.
5.)Keep asking questions. That's what this forum is for.
