cylinder order? been a while since working on an inline 4

....or a transverse inline four anyway. Sitting on the bike, facing forward, is the cylinder order from left to right or from right to left?

I'm asking because I have an idea that the PO got the coils switched, but when reversing the order there was no change.

i'm almost positive it's left to right.

Yup, that's right - when sitting on the bike the #1 cylinder is on the outer left, #2 inner left, #3 inner right, #4 outer right.

You didn't tell us your bike yr & model, but on these GS bikes the left coil connects #1 & #4, the right coil connects #2 & #3.

      good luck
