86 GS 550ES Exhaust Question
Has anyone tried to fit a GSXR 600 exhaust on 83-86 550ES...here is my thought...the engine for these years is actually 572cc with the patented TSCC (twin swirl combustion chambers)...there is no 550 in 87 and then the 600 series starts in 88...I think it's the same block just bored a little...kinda like a SB Chevy or SB Ford where the parts are fairly interchangable...parts for GSXR's are a dime a dozen on e bay...just a thought...will probably do the experiment my self...Tags: None

The 16 valve GS550 engine and GSXR/F engines are completely different, probably don't share one single common part. That being said, I have no idea if the exhaust holes line up or are the same size. You might get lucky, but then again, you might not. There would definitely be some clearance issues underneath the bike and to the side, even if the exhaust will fit at the top.sigpic

I know that is true of the 83 and earlier engine but is that true of the 83-86 engine, my understanding is that the 83-86 550 is a new engine and there is no commonality with the earlier 550

The sixteen valve GS550 engine shares no common parts with the eight valve GS550, nor does it share any common parts with the GSXR/F 600 engine. Look the part numbers up on bikebandit for yourself.
If you aren't going to believe responses to your questions here, why bother asking them?sigpic

I do not htink the head ports will line up
those were oil cooled engines were they not
the fiche diagram alos looks like the pipes are far wider spread in the rear
mind you a clever fellow with a welder and some time could work wonders if he got donor parts cheap
