I went to Z1 and got the aftermarket with adapter ($20 ?). Anyway, it's working just great for me. I guess it's whatever you are comfortable with.

    Rick.

BTW; really nice looking bike! I have the 79 GS750L (with E handlebars now).

Z1 will definately have the petcock and adapter you need for about $40 or less....

the petcock will be a bikerschoice one, but chrome and very nice, and then you will have to get the adapter plate to make it work

the petcock adapter you need is 44mm hole center to hole center.....

O.K. called Z1 today and talk to a really cool guy that set me up with a petcock and adapter plate for around $40. Thanks for all the help and I will report back after its installed.

it will come with hylomar gasket sealer,

that is great stuff! i saved what i didnt use.

and also you will have to make the hole in your tank a tiny bit bigger, so if you dont have a small file i would invest in one, they arent that expensive....

Be VERY careful with Hylomar sealer. It doesn't harden and any excess can get into the fuel system (or if used elsewhere the same can happen) and really mess things up.

            BTW-Doomed, you're DOOMED!

If you get it you are as sick as I.

Hey I have what looks like an aftermarket petcock on mine but there doesn't seem to be a reserve. I purposely ran my tank as long as I could just to see how many miles I could get out of it. When it started nosing over I switched to reserve but it never recovered....I just coasted into the gas station at an idle but if I gave it any gas it would just sputter. Just doesn't seem like I have a reserve...it is just on all the time.

BTW...I am in Lincoln....welcome DOomed! Hey 80GS where in Missouri are you headed?

                Hi everyone,
Put the new petcock in, ran great for about 5 miles. Started running like it was running out of gas for a few miles. I decided to get home ASAP, it started running great again. ???? The next day I started it up, runs bad, stumbling idle, white smoke out the tail pipe. Then suddenly runs good but if I crack the throttle it dies but if I roll on the throttle smooth as silk and now no white smoke(maybe I didn't fowl the plugs?)

                Soooo, I have no idea???

Right now this is the set-up...

-New plugs before the petcock install.
                -Stock air box
                -black 4 into 1 exhaust

One question the number 2 carb is the one with the vacum line that went to the old vacum petcock. Do I need to plug the vacum line or just let it breath in the open air?

                -Dana

hey doomed, you need to have that sucker plugged... otherwise it will let a massive vacuum leak into that cylinder....

maybe its starving... how did the inside of the tank look? all rusty, any gummed up stuff or crud on the old petcock???

i wonder if the PO put in the right jets for that 4-1, or even tuned it at all....

sounds like the jetting is off... if you wail on the throttle and it tries to die, either its getting too much or too little gas..

heres an idea... either do some plug chops to see where your jetting is at during certain parts of your throttle, or try choking it while your riding it, if the choke makes it idle higher, than your lean, if the choke kills it, then your rich

try goosing the throttle and choking it a little, if she takes off, your too lean, if it dies even faster, too rich..

but be very careful, if choking it makes it scream and you only have one hand on the bars... HANG ON

                  lol

oh and heres the thread for the ride this sunday..

Both of you are more than welcome, it would be nice to have more guys!!!

Congrats on the new ride!! It really looks like a good buy. I noticed that your rear taillight is cracked and taped. I have a good replacement available from my 78 550E parts bike if you're interested.

80GS750- I will plug that sucker up, thanks man! :-) My tank is really clean, and I really don't know about the jetting but I think I will be pulling the carbs and doing a rebuild or cleaning maybe. The boots seem to be fine SqDancerLynn1 but I really don't know about the rings. I tried to order the boots and o-rings from Z-1 but they where OOS. I will plug it and try what you said about the choking it.

Oh and I can't go on sun as I don't have a bike for one but second I am going with a friend to pickup a '57 Chevy pickup from somewhere in Iowa, 4hrs away.

Blueandorangefish- thanks man, I have already replaced it!

Oh and this is what scares me about this bike, this is the petcock I pulled...

Don't know why the bike even ran???

Well went to plug the vacuum hose from the second carb and its not the second carb that is producing the vacuum. Its the third one from the left if you are sitting on the bike. Thats the third one to me? Is this correct?
