New points and Carb adjustments
Ok, so I just put new points on and wow.....the bike really has rpms. I think my tach needle is moving farther than it has since I bought this bike. So I have way better rpms and power...but, it seems like I am sucking more air and at initial throttle the bike seems to bog a little. Does new points mean a new carb adjustment? Sounds & feels like that to me. What do you guys think?Tags: None

it sounds like you need to adjust the richness of your carbs if you change something inside the carbs they will have to be adjusted I would assume that there is not enough air to combust the fuel efficiently, so you get bog... it worked in my 1100G

yeah there should be adjustment screws on the carbs i think out is more air 99% sure... (or is it in)... pretty certian it is out more air, just a question?...does it bog while in gear or even in neutral? Be sure to turn the screws EXACTLY the same amount or it will run worse than ever

depends on the carbs. If screw is on engine side it's fuel and out is more fuel. If on the air filter side it's air and out is more air. That being said, it could be the needle or the main not the pilot that's only to 1/8 throttle, though they circuits are cumulative.Last edited by Guest; 06-21-2008, 10:46 PM.

Solved my own problem
I began to run over in my head all the things I have learned in this forum. So I started adjusting the screws on the air and fuel mixture with little results. Then, just out of instinct, I checked my pipes; 2 & 3 were cool. I new instantly I must have screwed up on my points installation since one of the points fires 2 &3. I pulled of the ignition cap and could see no sparking on the right point (2&3). I pulled it off, made sure it was all connected right and put it back on, gapped it and.....wow, my bike has four cylinders!
Took it for a ride and practically got a whiplash. Wow, that thing has power! No more wheezing, bogging, or pops. Just pure power!
It feels great to figure it out on your own...but only because all the help I have gotten from you guys!
Thanks!

I have admitted it in a couple other threads, but I had a 1981 GS1000S the Blue and white US version. This is maybe 1996 or 1997. I was in my 20's. I basically abandoned it and let it go the junkyard . This was before that fancy internet when finding out how to fix ANYTHING yourself was next to impossible unless you were lucky enough to know somebody. I was also a VERY poor (and dumb) college student I still have a little sick place in my heart over what happened to that bike.
If this place had existed then... sigh

I wasn't sure if I would ever get it running this well. But I just did what I was told--especially the carb cleaning part. The new points made a HUGE difference---almost like having a totally different bike.
