she's home! now a fork question..

my baby snuggled in between my car and my fiancee's car.

now a question.. my community has speedbumps.. and my forks made a "tack!" noise when going over them.. is that normal? it didn't shake the bike in any way, didn't feel funny, just that noise. i've never heard it before, but then again, i've never gone over speedbumps with her before.

i do have what i suppose are functioning anti dive units, if that makes any difference. thanks in advance!

Check you steering head bearings to see if they need tightening.

it didn't normally, but it was damaged before i bought it and the front forks were replaced with a set off an E model.

Didnt originally, he's changed forks. Seuadr, you might see if, when you compress the front end by hand, leaning on it, if it makes that popping noise. You might have a seal going bad, and air, if you've loaded it with air at all, is bypassing the seal. Oil might make that noise too. Otherwise, just give it a good once over, see if there is any binding at all, double check the tree clamps. You might loosen them with the bike on the centre stand, and bounce the front end a couple times to get the forks to settle. Could be in the anti dive system too, i dont know that much about them other than some people love em, most people hate em.

ok, i'll try that.. thanks. the gauges work great, by the way, tck!

when i bounce them by hand, no noise, also when i was riding from clio to lansing today i actually had a somewhat bouncy ride ( i69 can be rough ) and no noise.

Well, if you feel no ill handling and only have the problem on the speed bumps, i wouldnt worry too much about it (said the guy who worries about EVERY single noise he hears) You might check your swingarm bearings too. Could be coming from back there... Glad you got some use out of the gauges Everything on em works?

everything works great except the gas gauge.. but i think my sending unit is shot, rather than the gauge isn't working properly. i got a reaction from the gauge when i crossed the ground across a hot.

Another possibility for your noise is lack of fork oil. I don't remember if you have said how long you have had this bike, but chances are that the fork might be missing some oil. Check for signs of leakage around the seals, then drain the forks and install the proper amount of oil. The recommended procedure involves removing the springs and disassembling the forks, then filling with oil to get the specified level, but for quick diagnostic purposes, you can drain them and fill them. When you have the drain plug out, pump the forks a few times to pump the oil out of the small passages in the damper circuits. The best oil to use is fork oil (duh), but you will find other suggestions involving various mixtures of ATF and/or motor oil. The weight (viscosity) of the oil will depend on your weight and riding style, but 10w or 15w oil will probably do the job for you.

Had a click sound from my 'E' front end with anti dive fitted. It was where the fork stantions were wrong stantions for my model and the click was the inner cap bouncing and hitting the tensioner as it flipped on it side.

is that going to cause damage?

If you have a fork like this one the part circled in red is the bits thats clicking. Had one turn on it side inside the fork and jam the front suspension because it was the wrong tube.

i'm puzzled on how that bit would be clicking (not saying that it's not)
it's rather firmly squeezed in between the spring and the cap, even at the lowest spring tension setting
it shouldnt be able to turn inside the fork either as it's a snug fit inside
                            :-?

i suppose i'm looking at changing the fork oil to check that? ah well. i dunno when the last time it was changed anyhow, so i guess i should check it.
