    engine cover help

this might sound like a stupid question, but what can i expect if take the side covers off the engine to paint them? is there a gasket and oil? whats on both sides? 1979 gs 425L

Preface with: Unless way different than the larger bikes.

Right small in front, either points or electronic ignition, paper gasket to keep moisture out. Right with the window, clutch cover, probably need a new gasket. No oil loss (or minimal) if on side stand. Left front, Stator, probably need gasket, no or minimal oil if you lean to the right against something. Left behind that, gearbox cover. No oil, maybe paper gasket for moisture. starter cover, has a gasket, but mine has never had one there. Do yourself a favor and get SS Allen heads for when you put back together. Get an impact driver for taking them off.

      drgonzo is right

right front and left rear are NO oil

right rear, and left front have oil...

your better off draining the oil, then taking them all off, and putting in new gaskets...
