    quick float question

    hi i was wondering if i should measure the float height from th lip sorrounding or from where the gasket and bowl meet. the picture in the manual is to dark and i cant tell. thanks

      Best to do it without the gasket in place. If the gasket is there, most people say to allow 1mm, but I have measured (used) gaskets and found them to be between 0.8mm and 1.6mm, so I always remove the gasket for a stable reference point.

      Also, be sure you measure the correct part of the float. This picture is also a bit dark, but shows where to measure, right under the corner of the caliper, not to the top of the step.

        The carb specs on that page are for the 850, but I think the float heights are the same.

          Float Level

          I might add that Suzuki sells a tool to measure the actual operating fuel level in the float chambers on the bike. Its not very expensive and it is absolutely the most accurate way confirm correct float level. I can supply the part number if anyone is interested. (You could probably also make your own, if you can find a source for, or fabricate the fitting that screws into the drain plug hole.)

            What was the OEM part number?
            Did they have it in stock? I have a suzuki car/bike dealership (just built)
            about a mile from my house, I'll pop in on Friday to check it out.

              Just use a digital caliper.
              1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
              1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

                Suzuki OEM fuel level gauge

                Fuel level gauge (float level)
                09913-14511 6mm x pitch 0.75
                Attachment
                09913-14410 16mm x pitch 1.0

                (If you have the smaller drain screws you will not need the adaptor)

                The dealer most likely doesn't stock this item, but they can order it.
                Price, I think it was less than $10.00

                Per the manual:
                FUEL LEVLE INSPECTION
                -Place machine on center stand
                -Remove carburetor drain plug and install the level gauge (I use a tuna fish can to catch the draining fuel)
                -Run the engine at the idling speed (950 - 1150 r/min). and measure the distant with the middle line of the level gauge aligned with the lower surface of the carburater body.

                (It should be 5.0 +/- 0.5mm below the lower surface of the carb - that is the visible mating point of the body and the float bowl.)

                -Repeat the prodedure for each carburetor.

                If the levels are off, see the various posts in the tech section for how to readjust them.
