1980 GS850G seat trim

Is there a lower trim molding used on the seat of a 1980 gs850g?
the on-line catalogues show them used on this model.
the one I purchased did not have any, but there are three? small holes along the lower portion of the seat that make me think there should be mldgs on it.

Hi Mr. rustybronco,

Unfortunately, I broke some of the plastic mounting screws when I replaced my seat cover. Here's a "before" picture with the lower seat trim.




As you can see, a PO had already replaced a couple of the broken plastic mounts with screws (see the heads?) on that side and one on the other side. After I broke a couple more during my seat cover replacement I decided not to reinstall them. My seat cover replacement adventure is on my website if you'd care to look.

I kept the trim, thinking that I might put it back on some day. But I'm not sure it would look all that good with so many screw heads poking out.

Thanks, Mr. Basscliff, just what I suspected, time to add them to my "list".

how about a small "t" head machine screw that had a square head, to hold on your trim piece? the kind that use to slide into the back of a car mldg. (I'll see if I can find one and take a picture) then re-cover the mldg with 3m black trim tape?

About 4 years ago I replaced the left trim piece on bottom of seat on the 80 GS850G that I had at the time.

Ohter commments:
- Dont use bottom of seat as a grab hold when placing bike on center stand! That is probably what breaks them.
- The replacement trim piece is all silver/chrome. You will have to paint the colored center portion yourself. So need to find a suitable color to match the tank/fender ectera if you want it to look stock. I would say to error on the darker side rather than the lighter/brighter side.
- The trim piece has post. Will also need some of those clips - speed nuts.

Bike Bandit still sells the plastic trim pieces, (pretty $$spendy$$ though)
Unfortunately they come without the black line that runs down the center. I just grabbed some generic wide pinstripe tape at an auto parts store, ran a line, curved it at the end, voila.
Also, you need some of those push-on speed washer clamp things to hold them in place.

So it is plastic, not aluminum. correct?

Yes, plastic. At around $60 for the set, I might just buy them new when I want to replace them. Suzuki Part# 45191-45100 and 45192-45100. The speed nuts (I think you need 8?) are Suzuki Part# 09148-03008.
