I am working on a 1982 Suzuki GS850GL for a coworker. Wondering if I could pick your brains a little? Sorry for the long post ahead of time - hahaha.
He's had the bike for a year or two - said it never ran right - but ran good enough to ride evidently. It started running worse this year so he took the carbs off and gave them to someone else, got them back, still ran bad. He knows very little about bikes - mechanically - but messed with the carbs himself with no luck then brought the whole bike to me. It does run, just has to be started with starting fluid, won't idle, etc.
I took the carbs off, cleaned them, flushed the tank, put in new plugs and an inline fuel filter. The bike has some sort of aftermarket exhaust - looks similar to a Kerker maybe? I'm the third or fourth person to mess with the carbs and am not that familiar with these bikes. I have no idea where to start with all the settings - air mixture, idle, butterflies, etc. The only book he has is the Clymer - which doesn't have much info in it. I looked through your carb page and saw a very wide range of settings, I've tried every combo I can think of with no luck. I also did a search but didn't see anything that would really help - maybe I missed something. And most of the air mixture settings say "Preset" which doesn't really help since so many people have already messed with these carbs. These things are a mess - somewhere along the way it looks as if #3 and #4 carb may have been rejetted but it appears that #1 and #2 have stock parts in them. I don't remember all the numbers but the needles in 1 and 2 are 50's and the needles in 3 and 4 are 45's. I set the floats to 22 mm.
He wants to get rid of the bike so I'm trying to get it running for him.
I hope that is enough info, if not let me know and I'll try to post up what's needed. Any help is greatly appreciated - this thing is driving me nuts......Thanks again. Later.
