what tanks will fit 81 gs750

Just finished the other cafe (see the gs owners thread/ hi and share pics) adn got another gs750 in parts in the garage, shes all there but tank and seat, but going custom anyways (not sure if cafe, or chopper, have to put a tank on, sit back and decide based on the lines). I can get a 77 tank with everything on it (gas cap, keys, petcock, etc), but someone said it wouldnt fit directly without having to mod it, but searched and couldnt find the thread.
I'm gona visit the yard and check ebay, what years are a direct fit, what models, and how much modification to make pre-80's fit?? I'm thinking I may go cafe, not sure yet, but i was reading on here something about a more square 1000 tank? are they direct fits?? issues?? just looking for something cheap and bolt on but need years and models to search for, thanks gents. I dont have a welder yet, so needs to be fairly bolt on.

1000 tank will fit. pre 82 850 tanks will fit too and if you're going cafe, they are HUGE tanks the 750 tank looks like the 1100 tank, which will also fit.

thanks cafekid, much appreciated. What exact year did they change the frame on the 750's?? you told me pre-80's wouldnt fit, so did they change frames in 80? 79?81? let me know. theres that 77 at the yard for like 30 bucks with everything, i dont mind a little hammering and bondo, as i've got to bondo and paint anyways ya know. I see your profile says xs-400 (possible cafe project), check out my profile ablum, i've got an xs-400 chopper I made with suicide shift, pretty neat, only 242 bucks invested in total (120 for bike, 122 in ebay parts, 6 hours time, sold last month for 1600$). May give you some ideas what to do with it.

Nice! I paid 75 bucks for my XS, im not going to cafe it. Its simply too small for me. Im just going to get it running again and sell it. It actually runs amazingly well for sitting for 7 years. I need to go over the carbs again cos i pretty much half assed them the first time, just to see if it would run at all. Put a batt in, changed the oil and plugs, slapped the half clean carbs on, kicked it twice and it fired right up

They changed the frames in 80. That was the first year of the 16v 750 motor. Sad day indeed :P Say, if you get that junker 750, and want to sell some parts, lemme know, im always looking for parts for 8v 750s.

I am doing this my self, I have a 1980 750L and the tank of 83 1100E will fit on the frame. but then you have to change the side covers and seat too. I had a 83 1100GL parts bike that I bought for the tank and seat...
The GL model tank didn't fit. The problem was that the neck of the frame GL was narrower. Two cents

Im lookin for 8V 750 parts. That would be from a 77-79 750. In 80, they became a 16v TSCC motored bike. Unfortunately.
