    80 gs450lt idle problems

I just picked up an 80 gs450lt. I cleaned the carbs replaced o-rings made sure there are no leaks anywhere. It starts fine with choke open. After a couple min of warm up the idle raises to about 3-4K and stays there. If you close the choke it stalls out. (any adjustment to the choke stalls the engine.) When you give it throttle it stalls out. I have adjusted the mixture screws and no difference. I am at the end of my road on this one.
    thanks guys!

Did you also replace the o-rings in the intake boots? These are the tube between the carbs and the cylinder head, and are the actual seal between the tube and the head. If these have leaks, they will exhibit the same symptoms you are describing. They are available from cycleorings.com, which is probably the same place you got the o-rings for your carbs. You can also get stainless bolts to replace the garbage that is currently holding your intake boots in place.

What did you do when you cleaned the carbs? Did you take them apart and soak the parts in carb dip? Did you take the pilot jets out and make sure the orifice is open? Did you replace the rubber intake boot O-rings?

I ask these questions because many GS owners don’t properly clean their carbs and have problems like you describe.

The carbs were completely disassembled and soaked in dip. I used wire to clean inside jets. I didn't replace the boots. The ones on there were soft, squishy, and no cracks or rips. I didn't replace those o-rings between the boots and head. I will replace those next. This winter I plan on doing a complete teardown and rebuild replacing all the gaskets and such. Thanks again.

So your carbs should be good, those carb boot o-rings need to be changed though. They are the number one problem on old GS bikes so don't wait.
