compound to seal exhaust?

I have a 79 gs750 and its previous owner put harley pipes on it which do not quite fit over the exhaust headers. I've used "right stuff" sealant by permatex to seal up the leaks and it has worked ok, but once in a while i get a leak. Anyone know a better compound that would seal well and withstand the heat?

Permatex makes a patch material for mufflers and tailpipes. If the leak is between the header pipe and the head, I've had good luck with the permatex ultracopper RTV. I had a small exhaust leak on the #3 pipe between the head and the pipe and the ultracopper worked.

Clean all the sealant out of the joint and then see if you can get a spacer to fill the gap, or take the header and expand the pipe a little, or compress the muffler a little. You will continue to get leaks if you use sealer in a large gap, OR (last one I promise) braze the two together.

As Clone stated, close up the gap in some way. Once you achieve that, auto parts stores sell muffler wrap tape that's fiberglass with some sort of high temp resin binder. It should work for a while but don't expect it to be permanent.

thanks guys. well, i bought some of that "steel" putty that you mush together to activate. it says it can take temperatures up to 350 degrees, so i think i'll give it a shot. the permatex copper has really only worked for gaskets for me. if i use it on uncompressed surfaces it seems to peel off easily.
