What setting on multi-meter is for diodes-?? according to stator papers??Tags: None

Cooking with electrons
Hi Mr. rokacook,
Not all multimeters have a diode check function. Usually, instead of numbers, there will be a symbol for the diode setting that looks like this:
If you don't have a diode setting, you can use a resistance (ohms) setting. The diode will let electricity flow in one direction only. IOW, in one direction you will show a measurable amount of resistance. Then after you reverse your leads you will show infinite resistance.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

Diode test on a meter shows you what voltage it takes to cause a small curent flow (milliamps).
Put the meter on didode test. Notice that withe leads apart it reads 3.5, that is 3.5 volts because it is putting out 3.5 volts and still has no current flow (some meters may be 3.0 or some other), and the 3.5 is the max it will put out, remember this number. Now touch leads together, should read real low like 0.1 or maybe 0.01, because with leads together that voltage is all it takes to cause a small current flow.
So when testing a good diode it should read 3.5 (or whatever that meters max is) with leads in one direction, and 0.5 or 0.7 with leads inother direction becuase that is all the more voltage is should take to get the diode to conduct if voltage in proper polarity.
But also keep in mind that these discussions are of checking one diode, A diode. When checking the R/R you will at some times have the meter leads essentailly acrost one diodes and other times you will have meter leads acrost things other than one diode. But again, the meter is telling you how much voltage (up to some max the meter puts out) it takes to cause a certain current flow.Last edited by Redman; 07-12-2008, 07:10 AM.http://webpages.charter.net/ddvrnr/GS850_1100_Emblems.jpg

Not intiending to talk about "how to test R/R", But In staying with the subject of "whats diode test on meter": When using diode test of the meter when checking R/R it is good to refere to this schematic, then can see when meter is essentailly acroast one diode and when are acraost something other than one diode.
Yes, the stator papers has you use the diode test function of a meter. More meters have diode test function these days than use to years ago.
Suzuki factory manaul describes testing R/R with the ohm meter (resistance).

Doh... your question of "what setting" is diode check.
........
Yah, like Cliff said, is usally the diode symbol.
And there will only be one, where as for voltage ther may be a few diferent ranges to select, and for resistance there may be a few different ranges to select. But will only be one diode test position (the symbol probeblay), in between all the other larger sections for all the different ranges for voltage and such.
Or if you have an older meter or maybe a smaller newer meter it may not have a diode check.Last edited by Redman; 07-12-2008, 07:29 AM.http://webpages.charter.net/ddvrnr/GS850_1100_Emblems.jpg

Diode test
I have a new Gardner Bender Multi-meter but when I bought I never thought I would need to test Diodes so did not buy one for that I will use the resistance test. Thanks for the info I will go back to my charging system now.. Love these bikes

Tested with on ohms and found that stator was good and that the r/r was playing ignorant to its job so I replaced it runs fine now thanks my friends

I know that I should have ordered the electrotec stator and r/r but I had a honda r/r from a salvage engine I have here and used that I WILL BUY THE AFTERMARKET KIT SOON> I just could not wait to ride again on my fav ride
