    Chain size

I need to replace the front sprocket on my 1980 550L, PO has done some work to bike how do you tell if it has a 530 or 520 chain? I have tried looking for markings on the existing sprockets.

The OE chain is 530. Difference between 520 and 530 is width. You might want to measure the width of the sprockets and compare to standard.

    To measure is to know.

        Measure your chain in eighths of an inch - if it's 3/8 it's a *30, 4/8 it's a *40 etc. 0.355 doesn't fit - should be 0.375 to be a 530.
