    83 gs1100e Acceleration Issue?

    What's up Everyone?

I have a stock 83 gs1100e. When accelerating in first, second gear it feels like the bike stutters then picks up. On the top end in 5th gear when I try going up to 60 to 70 and above the throttle responce is poor. I tried to explain it as best as I could. If someone has had this same problem please give me some advice?

    Thanks, Supavert

Completely Stock? Ever cleaned the carbs? Was it running good then this happened, or is the bike new to you and/or been sitting a while?
    Check for easy stuff first.
Vac. leaks at manifolds, or vac line to petcock.
    Check petcock for good flow.
    Gas tank vent.

Take a look at the color of your spark plugs. Being a CV carb these don't have acceleration enrichment circuits, so they might bog if the throttle is blipped too quickly. If the carb is fouling the plugs from running rich this problem will get progressively worse. Hope this helps.

I'll throw my bet down on the typical "Lean Burn" issue that always pops up here. Is the bike stock, modded or somewhere in between? Carbs cleaned and synched? Pods or airbox? Stock exhaust or other?

Properly set up CV carbs do not bog no matter how fast the throttle is blipped. It is true that early '80's bikes were set up a little lean from the factory but they never ran as badly as you're describing. What you are describing could be one of a million different things.

Your valves need to be adjusted, spark plugs fresh and gapped, all of the stuff paco13 mentioned, fresh air cleaner, clean every ground you can find. Even if these things don't fix the problem they need to be in good order to be eliminated before you can proceed with any further troubleshooting.

              What's up guys?

I have had the bike for about two months. The previous owner informed me that when he put the 4 to 1 kerker pipe on the bike he also installed a jet kit. Those are the only mods that were done. Everything else is bone stock.

              Thanks for your help, supavert

If the bike has a jet kit you should have needles with multiple grooves cut into them. It sounds like you're lean. Try raising the needles (move the e-ring to a lower groove) and see if it improves. You can access the needles by GENTLY removing the carb tops and diaphragms. The needles drop down into the slide that is connected to the diaphragms.

                Thanks,
                Joe

If I recall on my 80 1100, I needed to modify (file) a hardware store bought snap ring plier to fit into the slide.

Have a 1100 that wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Took the top end off to check the valves to find a worn out exhaust cam and two cam followers.

Not all bogging down is carb linked.

Correct, but it is a good place to start given that the bike has a pipe and jet kit and the symptom sounds jetting related. As RJ said, it could be one of a million things...............
