    GS1000 head on 850

Does anyone know if a '79 GS1000 head will fit a '79 GS850G cylinder and motor?

I'm thinking about replacing the head instead of driving myself crazy trying to drill out broken exhaust bolts. There is a '79 1000 head on Ebay right now in the same state.

    I'm assuming a '79 1000 would have to be an E model rather than a G.

It's not a direct bolt on Just guessing. First problem is the 850 uses an idler gear between the cam sprockets the 1000 doesn't. If you eliminate the idler the cam chain will be too long. Cam cover is also different
Why not spend the $60 ?? and have a machine shop remove the broken bolts

Is that a common price? I assume this would be with the head removed.

      Thanks for the info.

        heads

        no, not a bolt on
        750 would fit though

but why not practice taking broken bolts out
not that difficult after you've done a couple

I've removed my share of broken bolts over the years using easyouts. These just seem to be the hardest bolts ever made. As hard as they are to drill I really can't believe they ever broke.

I'll keep working on them. Maybe I'll get lucky and won't have to pull the head.

Chris, they are that hard now from "heat cycles". They have now been "heat treated" from all of the time on the engine. It makes them VERY hard! Ray.
