    No power ????????? Very, Very confused

    O.K. here's the problem Im trying to get an 82 gs650 running again that was given to me. The bike was laid down years ago then left outside.Before I got to far in debt in fixing this thing up I decided I better check the compression I had to replace the batter not only because it was old but because it was cracked and acid had caused alot of rust in that area.

    So off I went, I took out the battery and the the battery tray cleaned all the rust off reinstalled the tray hooked up all the wiring (hopefully correctly) and prepared to see if I had any power. I put the key in and turned it to the on position and the the gauge lights came on. There were no left turn signals or headlight but the breaklight and right turn signals worked. Here's where the problem occured. I turned the key to the start position and nothing no power no light nothing it was like I shut the bike off. Now as I said before the the bike was laid down pretty hard so I knew it was going to be a big task. I did find that there was a wire that runs to the instrument cluster that runs to the starter that had been torn loose when it was wrecked. from the on position I touched the wire to the handle bars and could hear the starter turning but still the engine would not turn over for a compression check. I tried the same thing from the start position and still nothing. So if anyone has any ideas feel free to drop a line

    go straight to the starter relay and short across the 6mm bolts. that will make the engine turn over for that compression test.

    it might be a good idea not to ground any unidentified wires. and keep the fuses in place

      Did you pull in the clutch? There is an interlock to keep the engine from turning over when the clutch is not pulled in.

      Also, you can't expect good compression numbers on an old engine that has not run for years. Won't hurt to check but don't get alarmed right away if things seem off until you have a chance to adjust the valves and put some miles on the bike.

        6mm bolts

        your saying the the bolts on the relay right???

          Yeah, the bolts on the starter solenoid. with a PLASTIC handled screwdriver, short the two poles and the bike will turn over. I'm with Nessism though. You're not going to have the compression now that you will after adjusting the valves and letting the rings seat well.

            The key postion is the key

            You said you turned the key to on. That is where it needs to be for the bike to run. If you turn it past that, its for parking with your tail light on. Like nessism said pull the clutch in and put in nuetral. with my bike when its in first and the clutch pulled it is alot harder for the bike to start.

            with these old bike just do one thing at a time
