Measure without a digital caliper?

Any way to measure float height without a digital caliper? Cant really afford on at this point.

Any ruler will work. Some people take a piece of card board, measure carefully and then cut out a template. Template is easier to manage when checking float height since you don't need to focus as hard on reading the value off the scale.

Thanks nessism. Ive had my new V&H pipe for 3 months and my 3rd cylinder from left to right does not have any color to it. The other 3 have that blueish/orange color. What would that be the cause of? Should I worry about it too much?

For the long term I'd invest in one. I found one on Amazon for like $12.00 plus shipping, sure it's not the most durable, and only goes to 100ths of a millimeter, but works for my purposes. First time I measured them I did as Nessism said and made a template.

Yeah, im going too. Just cleaned my carbs yesterday and didnt measure the float height. While i have each carb together, but seperated from one another, I can measure the float height. Thanks again.

Having the carbs ganged together or loose doesn't effect float height. Regarding the color difference in your pipes, did you sync the carbs and install a jet kit when you put on the pipe?

A regular caliper will work just fine.

I personally did not put in a jet kit, but a while back when I had my old V&H pipe, my mechanic did. But ive had a new pipe and recently put on K&N pods on there. Just all around been having trouble. About 2 months ago, my mechanic synched the carbs and I watched. For some reason ever since ive took my bike to him 2 years ago, he has always had issues with my carbs and jetting. Yet does carb rebuilds for harleys all the time. I just wish I bought a brand new set of carbs 2 years ago instead of spending time and frustration all this time.
