Help! 1980 GS550E REALLY hard to start warm

Ok here's the thing... When I start the bike cold, it doesn't start nearly as hard as it does when it's warm. I've has it for about a year now and am currently plagued with the dreaded charging problems. Anyway, when the bike runs long enough warm, it is EXTREMLY difficult to start back up. I mean were talking 25-40 seconds of cranking for it to even fire. But once it gets running, it runs and idles perfectly. I don't know what to do about it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
