what is "wet" sanding?

can someone describe it for me? is it the name of a type of sandpaper, or rather a technique?

and if a technique, what is it?

"WET" sandpaper is a waterproof paper that is usually covered with fine silica, instead of normal sand/grit.

The media used is much finer than conventional sandpaper and while the "wet" paper can be used in dry state, it actually performs better when water is used as a lubricant. One does not need a high rate of water flow, although a steady flow IS best. For most work frequent dipping of the paper will cleanse the grit and frequent swabs with a dripping wet cloth will clear the area being worked on.

The water allows the material to be removed during the sanding action, so there is no build-up and no streaking due to grit concentration.

This keeps keeps the gritty parts working and that permits a finer grit to be used, the combination of which allows for a very smooth surface that is far more difficult to achieve with only dry sanding..

a tiny drop of dish detergent in the bucket of water doesn't hurt either, will keep the residue that does collect from clumping.
