Float measurement in progress..
Tryed to find this in existing threads.....no luck. 81 GS750L,BS32SS carbs. I understand where to measure to. I have the calipers. I'm roaring and ready to go. The tutorial says "measure the height while float arm is just in contact with the needle valve"....When I let the weight of the float rest on the needle valve, it compresses slightly. It's not "just in contact"...Does it matter?? Am I splitting hairs?? ThanksLarry D

Going through my carbs fixing this and that while waiting on engine to arrive and discovered the spring too weak in one of mine. The little pin would compress a mile before it caught well enough to really move the needle. Luckily had a spare.

Hold the float up, don't let it compress the needle spring. If the needle is really saggy, I'd replace it.Ed

Hi Mr. Larry D,
I can't really tell from where you measured the float level. The manual says to measure from the step, and not from the very top of the float. Here's a picture from some of my collected carb notes.

I noticed some of my needle springs arent as springy as some others. Very slight difference, but I can notice it. Would it be cheaper to by 4 kits just to have the extra parts? Sorry to jack the thread.

BassCliff, I did measure from the step as per the instructions. I took the pics to show how far off they were. All 4 were approx the same. I had to bend the tab "down" or toward the valve. I took a rough measure and each were +- 5.0mm off. I said that already, didn't I ?Larry D

Just as a sanity check I'd compare the side view of your floats, after being properly adjusted, to the photo in the factory manual; the float should angle slightly upward, not angle sharply upward. If the angle of the float is significantly different from the factory photo, something is most likely wrong. Finding the floats 5 mm off is a red flag that something has changed or your measurement is off in some way. Also, the float tabs should be pretty close to flush with the float arm; if the tab is angled noticably, this is another red flag.
Hopefully everything is okay but it won't hurt to double check to make sure.Ed
