How do I swap coils

Hi,

I'm working on an '80 GS850GL and need to know how to swap the coils.
I've taken them off, and planned to swap locations, but need to know which lead goes where, after moving them.

Plug wire marked as 1 now goes to Cyl 2 or 3?
Plug wire marked as 2 now goes to Cyl 1 or 4?

I see lots of posts that say "swap the coils", but I don't see any instructions on how to do so.

Any advice appreciated.

Remove the question marks and you have answered your own questions.

Plug wire marked as 1 now goes to Cyl 2 or 3.
Plug wire marked as 2 now goes to Cyl 1 or 4.

Since the electrical plugs are slightly different, I have found that the easiest way to swap the coils is to remove the input wires from the coils, exchange the coils, re-connect the input wires. The plug wires that were on 1&4 need to go on 2&3 and vice versa.

The coils are essentially identical. If there is a connector with two wires on it you may notice that one coil has a male and the other has a female on it with the reverse setup on the wiring harness. This may not be the case depending on your model.

Anyway, after that they are exactly the same. One coil fires both 1 and 4 at the same time. Since only one cylinder has fuel in it at the time, the other spark is wasted but it doesn't matter. At opposite intervals the 2 and 3 coil fires those cylinders; also at the same time. To do the test you're talking about, a wire from 1 can be connected to 2 or 3 as long as you've swapped the black and white leads. Use your wiring diagram to make sure everything is correct first. The start trading connectors to troubleshoot.

That was the answer that I was looking for, LarryA_Texas.
The fact that the coil fires both cylinders at the same time, makes it easier.
I made the assumption that they were out of phase, and needed to be careful as to which of the other two cylinders I put the plug wire onto.
