79 850 dynojet questions
I have a '79 850 that I am rebuilding the carbs and installing a dynojet stage three kit on. The dynojet kit appears to be made for BS carbs and I have VM. It was advertised as fitting all gs850 models. So what parts of the kits do I use? The main jet fits, but the needles are about 1/4 shorter than stock. There is also main jet correctors do I use these? thanks for any help.Tags: None

You can't use that kit. Take it back and ask for a refund. Shame on the seller.Ed
To measure is to know.

Is there a dynojet kit that will fit? I have pods and straight pipes with baffles so I need to rejet.

I'm not sure but I think the jet needle for your 850 is the same as for the 1000. If so, then you can use the DJ jet kit for the '78/'79 1000 which is still available. Also, compare main jet sizes between the 850 and 1000. Post the jet needle/main jet findings here and we can help you further.
If there are differences at the jet needle that can cause difficulty, you can also try re-jetting by richening the stock jet needle position and buying separate larger main jets and possibly larger pilot jets (if richening the pilot fuel screws underneath doesn't work).
I always recommend the kit unless forced to buy separate jets. However, the DJ kit is specifically designed for use with K&N filters and a quality exhaust. If you have cheaper pods and/or a "custom" exhaust, you may get results you're not expecting.
Keep in mind the bike will also have to be ready for the re-jet. Valve clearances, good compression, ignition timing/spark quality, all electrical connections checked-clean and tight/proper voltage, clean carbs, no intake leaks, properly cleaned and if applicable, oiled filters, synched carbs...all must be done, not just assumed, to accurately re-jet and avoid frustration. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

For the stage 3 kit to work as designed, you need a QUALITY pipe and K&N pods. Any other combo may compromise results. Also, all other tuning must be done FIRST for good results including clean carbs with fresher inner o-rings, no intake leaks at the manifolds, good/uniform compression, valve clearances set, ignition timing spot on and good spark/proper voltages/good connections throughout.
Let us know what aftermarket parts you have, the condition of the motor, etc, and we'll try to help further. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
