oil drain plug
I've changed the oil in my old 850 dozens of times without problems. What size scocket do I need? I think my current 850 drain plug is 20mm, but a 20 mm doesn't quite fit and I don't have a 21mm. Should I be shopping for a socket or cusing quietly to myself.

I don't have a 20 or a 21, either, but my 13/16" spark plug socket works quite well.
If you do the math, 13/16" works out to 20.6 mm, so it probably requires a 21 mm socket.

It's 21mm.
Many spark plug sockets don't fit, either. But some are sloppy enough to work fine.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I use my 13/16" spark plug socket for both of my GSes oil drain plugs.
You probably know this, but do not tighten that plug too tight. I use a dab of loctite and 2 finger tighten mine. They strip out pretty easily and the loctite keeps it from somehow vibrating lose and bad things happening!
