    78 GS 550 Electrical - I read the stator papers need help

    I've got a 1978 GS 550 that is two weeks new to me. When I bought it the owner told me it had a bad battery and the turn signals didn't work, probably because they were aftermarket and they might not be the right wattage. They turned on, but wouldn't flash (The relay is good).

    So two issues. 1st, I used my clymer guide and used the test outlined there, According to this the alternator and rectifier are working, outputing 17v at 5k rpm. I tested the yellow wire coming from the regulator (different from rectifier, correct?) and I got nothing, leading me to believe that I need to replace this regulator. If I am correct, should I just buy the electro unit that is a rectifier/regulator combo? Also do they make one for my bike, I thought that mine was a 4 valve and they are offering one for an 8 valve.

    Also, last night on the freeway at about 60mph 5k+rpm, my right turn signal started to flash (I usually manually flash them, but it worked for once). The left still would only light constant, and if I slowed down the right wouldn't work. Any ideas? Related the the problem above?

    Sounds like your regulator is TOAST. Yes, you can replace with a combination unit. The best place to get one is right here on this board. Do a search for member Duaneage. He buys old Honda units that are better than our Suzuki units, tests them and sells them for only $40. Hard to pass up a deal like that.

      Think you've got some grounding / connector issues as well. 17 volts should have those flashers winking madly away. Couple of other things. Your bike is an 8-valve with the separate regulator and rectifier. The unit from Duanage will replace both. Finally, that yellow lead is the AC input from one of the stator outputs to both the regulator and one of the rectifier bridges. Can't use it to check the regulator.

      If your regulator isn't toast, the ground connection for it is open. Common problem. At the very least, run the ground on it directly to battery negative. Give the whole electrical in that area a good cleaning when you change it out, or you'll be swapping parts again in a little while. Replace bullet connectors (they're terrible) with spade connectors.

        Ok, I appreciate the inputs, I am going to start my check over again tomorrow, following the advice, I will clean up all my connections and re ground the charging system.

        I just picked up a used Suzuki part no RS 2150. I believe this is a regulator/rectifier combo, please confirm. I have no way of knowing if it is good at this point (until I install it right?) But even if I do, it's only a matter of time before it goes bad right? Don't they all go bad?

          Perhaps you've already seen these, but I like to remind all the new members. In addition to the
          carb rebuild series, I recommend visiting the In The Garage section via the GSR Homepage and check out the Stator Papers. There's also a lot of great information in the Old Q&A section. I have some documentation on my little BikeCliff website to help get you familiar with doing routine maintenance tasks (note that it is 850G-specific but many tasks are common to all GS bikes). Other "user contributed" informational sites include those of Mr. bwringer, Mr. tfb and Mr. robertbarr. And if your bike uses shims for valve adjustments, send an email to Mr. Steve requesting a copy of his Excel spreadsheet that helps you keep track of clearances, shim sizes and other service work.

          Every GS850 (and most other models) has (or had) a set of well-known issues that MUST be addressed before you have a solid baseline for further troubleshooting. It's a vintage bike, and it's quite common (as in, every single GS850 I have had contact with) that there are multiple problems that have crept up and slowly gotten worse over the years. It's not like a newer vehicle, where there's generally one problem at a time.

          These common issues are:

          1. Intake O-rings (install NEW OEM or Viton only - common nitrile O-rings will quickly deteriorate from heat)
          2. Intake Boots (install NEW -- these cannot be repaired)
          3. Valve clearances (more important than most people think)
          4. Carb/airbox boots
          5. Airbox sealing
          6. Air filter sealing
          7. Petcock (install a NEW one)
          8. On '79 models, install new points or Dyna electronic ignition (or at least verify that the old points are working correctly)
          9. On all models, it's fairly common to have problems with the spark plug caps. These are $3 or $4 each, and often worth replacing if you're keeping the stock coils/wires.
          10. Stock exhaust with NO leaks or holes -- good seals at the head and at the junctions underneath.

          Carburetor maintenance:

          Replace the intake boot o-rings, and possibly the intake boots. Here's the procedure:

          You'll also want to examine the boots between the carbs and the airbox. There's a good chance these are OK, but check them over.
          And finally, if things still aren't exactly right, you'll want to order a set of o-rings for BS carbs from the GS owner's best friend, Robert Barr:
