CV Diaphragm

While rebuilding the carbs off my 80 gs1000, among other problems I found that the diaphragm on one had been installed impropperly (whoever last "rebuilt" these carbs was an idiot). The edge of the diaphragm got pinched under the cap and now there is a small slice in the edge. I think I should be able to reuse it, but would like some input before i proceed. Thanks for any advice,

It looks like that diaphragm will seal.
Install it and blow in the top port on the filter side of the carbs. This should lift the slide.
If it seems to lift at the same rate of the others use it.

I will disagree with the GSR regulars on this one. That diaphram is toast.

It would be better if you can afford to replace that one. You can try using it but it may not rise as the other three so your GS will not rev out to maximum rev's.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I am going to give it a try. As far as getting max revs goes, I'm a new rider, so it's probably best that I can't get that anyway. Paul

If you have the thing out, I would replace it. Why risk it when an air leak or lack of vacuum could affect the cards tremendously? From the pic it does not look like it is in great shape even if it did not have the cuts in it. Just some advice, good luck.

Definetly replace it they sell for $35.00 for just the diaphram new, no slides, with the slides it's about $95.00, not worth the headaches trying to tune a bike with air leaks of any kind.

I believe it is physically possible to replace the diaphragm separately, but as far as I can tell it's only available with the slide.

I can't remember the address or the name but i know it's in this forum because when you do a search the company sells jets and carb parts and even inexpensive oem style signal lights, i will try to find it and post it for you.

Ok i was smart enough to save it in my favorites although it seems they have the diaphrams with the slides but its cheaper at 57.00, search this whole site and tehy may still have the diaphrams, do a search on google also i know they are out there.

And yes you will need to sacrifice a young virgin princess on your bike when its done to thank everyone, yes pics would be a bonus ( of the princess not the carb !!-lol )

Hmm... $84.95. The OEM part from Suzuki is $96.27.

$339.80 vs. $385.08 for four. Nothing to sneeze at, I guess.

And they have gas caps pretty cheap, which is cool -- just $26.95. And lots of other goodies besides.

i've seen the diaphragms sold separately somewhere, but they were not available for mikuni bs series but only for some other (old) carbs

Sorry the link wasn't the goose that laid the golden egg for you but they are out there, mine weren't that bad so i didn't need them. You can scrounge a used set of carbs that may have them in good shape. Unless the po butchered them these things are usually not that bad in used carbs.

That was Brian's way of saying it was the goose that laid the golden egg.
I checked out that site when I was searching for some. I liked it even though I didn't buy anything.
I've had bad diaphragms and did the used Ebay carbs think and it worked out.
I also got a set from a member here. They worked out well too.

I have some good slides from an 82 GS750. Don't know if they will work.

I just bought OEM slide/diaphrams for $75.11 from cheapcycleparts.com.
