    Swingarm Replacement?

    I have a 78 GS550, live in Oregon and plan on riding through the rainy season. I am thinking a slightly wider tire might help with handling and the like? Was wondering what kind of suggestions were out there for swaps? Thanks.

    Really, no opinions out there? I read about 78gscafe putting the 1100e swingarm on, any other options, anything easier?

      Fitting a GS(X)1100 swinging arm was to get rid of the old round tube arm for a box section job. It was cheaper than going to a specialist manufacturer and having one made such as Maxton, Spondon, Harris, Dresda or any of the specialist frame companies.

      I'm not sure what is avaliable in the USA as aftermarket parts (very few off the shelf in the UK)

      Its a question of measuring the width if the frame and swinging arm then measuring others to see what will fit. You may have to make or have made a few spacers if you want to run a different sized rear wheel and tyre.

        from what i have read a wider tire will make it more likely you hydroplane, if rain is what your worried about you may be better off sticking with stock.

            What brand and model of tire are you currently using? Are you still running the OEM fork springs and OEM rear shocks? I am not sure about a wider tire helping you but changing to a quality/sticky tire and upgrading suspension if you have not done it yet would be all you need to do IMO. Pirelli Sport Demons and Avon Roadriders are very well thought of by most people here for both dry and wet road conditions. Progressive or Hagons are worth every penny as suspension upgrades are also mandatory safety upgrades IMHO.

              The 550's were the best handling GS even with stock wheels and tires. They are almost perfectly balanced. Instead of modding your suspension, invest that money into quality rubber. It makes a world of difference.

              Metzeler is my fav for the GS line.
