cam cover gasket causes noise???

I have a 1982 650e, just adjusted the valves but now have a clicking/tapping noise. I rechecked valve adjustment, it's good but I discovered that the tach gear is making the noise. I removed it and it was quiet, put it back in and the noise is back. Has anyone experienced this after having the cam cover off? The gasket I used was after market and a lot thinner than the one that came off. This could cause the gear to sit down in the drive gear a little further so has anyone had problems with thin gaskets and this kind of problem????

Some people using thick gaskets, like the Real Gasket, on 550's report problems with limited gear engagement so it stands to reason that a thin gasket may allow the teeth to bottom out against each other. If it were me, I wouldn't run the bike until you figure this out, and most likley, get a proper gasket.

SOme have used the Real Gaskets cam cover but ... Any bike that has the tack gear in the cam cover should use Nothing less that the OEM gasket !!!

Bite the bullet and buy a genuine suzuki gasket

Get the verniers out. Measure the thickness of the old gasket. Measure the new one you put in. That will put you in the picture. Get some gasket material the correct thickness and cut one out for yourself. About 30 mins work. Check out Cliff's website for a how to.
