In first timers carb specs for the CV carbs on a 550 he states that 3.5 turns out of the pilot screw is the factory setting surley this is now wrong?

From what I understand that is just a place to start from. That setting will allow the bike to run well enough to get it warmed up so you can fine tune it. Allow me to quote someone with more experience...

I tend to go back and check them all again before I call them 'good'. Now you need to count the turns and record them for future reference. It is not unusual for them to be different, as each carb will have slightly different tolerances coming down the production line, let alone what they look like 27 years later.
