    Blowby out the crankcase breather??
Shoot bro! Ride the crap out of it!
I get blowby smoke when hot too. There is NO problem with my head or rings!
I even get a little oil in my little tupperware catch pan. I flog my bike daily though!

Have you done a compression check yet? Using any oil? Most likely the engine is okay as long as these are normal.

Really? I never had a bike blow out smoke quite like this before so I thought the rings hadn't seated properly. Compression is at 150psi across all four cylinders and it really does run pretty smooth.

So, pardon my ignorance, but exactly what is happening then to create the blowby smoke?

        Thanks.

Some blowby is normal and expected since the rings have gaps in them. Also, some of that fog you see is from oil - catch it in a container for a while and you will get an oily mess.

This is pretty much a steady stream of white smoke. I'm going to try to take a video of it tonight and post it up somewhere. That might help determine if this is normal or too much.

            Thanks guys.

              White smoke? Water condensation?
Are you running pods with a crankcase filter? I think it's just the crankcase relieving pressure.
Great compression! I wouldn't worry about it unless your getting fuel in the oil.

As long as your compression numbers are good, your blowby is okay. Sounds like you might be fretting needlessly.

Do you have the stock airbox on it and hose? Or just running the breather open? if so, you might want to pick up a filter (i think some of the autoparts stores cary a little pod filter type that will fit just right) and either put it directly on the breather cover if there is room, or run a hose back to somewhere on the back side of the motor basket and put the filter on it there. It may just be normal that you wouldnt notice with a airbox or filter on it?? Also, do you know if the motor had any MMO or the like in it at some point? That stuff from what ive heard takes forever to burn off.

OK, I'm convinced. I'm fretting over nothing due to my ignorance. Not the first time. It's not water but oil smoke for sure. I've got pods, Kerker 4-1, Mikuni 34mm RS Flatslides. Is there really a need to filter this smoke? I just put on a really long breather tube and ran it down the right side and just behind the foot rest, so it vents below the pipe.

And what's MMO? (and I don't mean Massively Multiplayer Online)

                    Thanks.

Marvel Mystery Oil or any variant of. Its generally used to either store a motor, or to bring one back from the dead. (unseize stuck rings or whatever)

No, none of that. Just 10W-40, no additives.

Many bikes will create a lot of blowby and smoke (w/o airbox) or puke a little oil into the airbox when run hard if the oil is overfilled a little.
In fact, it can even do it when filled to the full mark.
Next time out, ride a bit slower and see if it does it. If not, now you know for sure what is going on. If it does, try a little less oil in the crankcase as the crank is whipping up the oil.
On cars and some bikes that is what windage trays are used for.
On my 90 Guzzi I have a sump extender which increases the distance between the oil and the crank. My 87 Guzzi doesn't have this and guess what it does when ridden hard?
So, I run it with the oil showing half way up the dipstick instead of at the "full" mark.

I agree with the others as I don't think you really have too much of a problem.

With that setup I bet you're running GREAT! I bet it would of taken the 36mm. I wish I had the money to buy some RS flatsides. I will someday.

I've got the 34's dialed in pretty close but I think I might go up one step in the mains yet. When I bought the 34's, I didn't have the '80 GS1100ET. I was working on an '83 GS1100GLD and figured the 36's would be overkill. Now I wish I would have bought the 36's but I'm happy with the performance of the 34's. It goes PLENTY fast enough for me. Stupid 85mph speedo, GAWD I hate that thing. That's on my list of items to replace eventually. It's so easy to peg that dial that I'm doing it almost daily anymore. I really have to make a conscious effort to NOT twist the throttle like that. It's tough.
