RPM's not moving and a slight leak

So.. after almost a complete summer of not riding (travel work family) I finally take the old 1980 GS 850 out for a spin, I looked down and noticed that the RMPS went really moving much and slow to come back down when I pulled back in my Drive way I noticed some smoke coming up from the front. it looked as though there was a slight leak from where the RPM cable went into the motor...

Any ideas why this would occur and how can I fix it quickly so I can finish out the season

    Thanks in advance

When you say the "PMPS went really moving much" do you mean the tach is not working properly or is the engine not running properly?

If it's the tach, take a look at the cable where it attaches to the head. This could be the source of smoke (oil leak) as well.

    Good luck.

Yes the Tach isn't moving much it moves just not much and then slow to return to idle. That's where the leak is occuring where the Tach connects to the Head.

Sounds like time to remove the cable, remove the driven gear and checking out all the parts. You might have to remove the valve cover to have a look at the drive gear on the exhaust cam. Sounds like a good excuse to check the valves as well if you haven't done it recently.

why would this cause a leak...?
I'm just curious on this one, I would like to finish riding out the season how long do you think this will take?

Check to see that your tach cable is securely fastened at both ends. The cable could have broken or be loose.

The leak sounds like the tach cable seals. BWringer has a good writeup on how to replace here> http://bwringer.com/gs/tachcableseals.html
