    GS550ES Popping on Decel

I have been having a ball with my GS550ES. I found a mid 80's Vance and Hines Pipe for this bike on ebay and bought it. After many hours of rust removal and polishing of the stainless steel can, I installed it. I then had to jet up to 107's and reset the idle jets and synched the rebuilt carbs. The bike starts immediately runs flawlessly developing good power and great throttle response. When I am backing off the throttle at 8-9k rpm I get some pretty good popping going on until the engine rpm's get down to between 5-6 k rpm. Perhpas this was a characteristic of this pipe setup as it is very short compared to the sport bike pipes of today. I don't want to touch it as it is running better than it ever has in the 6 years I have owned it and brought it back to running condition. What say you?????????

Try adjusting your mixture screws, then look at your plugs and jetting.

      Hope this helps

If you get more than four turns out on the idle mixture screw and still experience popping go up one size on the pilot jets.
