Need info for engine fluids.Hey everyone, I am new to the whole motorcycle world and I need some help. I had to take my motorcycle apart to drill out some exhaust bolts and in the process I drained all of the fluids. I am wondering if someone could give me recommendations on what type of fluids I put back into it. I have a 83 gs1100 gl and so I am curious as to what motor oil, transmission oil, and gear lube (for the shaft drive) to put back into it. Thanks

Secondary gear reduction and final drive take 90W gear oil - 75W-90 is more commonly available and is fine. Any brand is fine.Originally posted by TK685 View PostHey everyone, I am new to the whole motorcycle world and I need some help. Engine oil is like religion - everyone has their own opinion and many people are uninformed (except me of course).

I recommend use of diesel engine oil - it's a much better choice than auto oil since auto oils have reduced zinc and other high pressure additives these days to increase catalytic converter life in cars. Diesel oil also has reduced zinc starting with their 2007 formulations but it's still 1/3 higher than auto oil. Any diesel oil will work - 15W-40 is common. Shell Rotella is a good choice. Much cheaper than motorcycle specific oil and every bit as good if not better. If you want to extend the change interval you can use a synthetic oil. More pricey but good stuff. And no, it won't make your clutch slip or cause leaks unless you have leak paths plugged by sludge.

Hope this helps and good luck.Ed

thanks for the info that is very helpful, I know I can look this up in a manual but while people seem to be so quick and helpful on here does anyone know exact amounts of how much of each fluid I'll need to put back into it?

No such thing as exact amounts since there is always residual fluid inside that doesn't come out.Originally posted by TK685 View Postthanks for the info that is very helpful, I know I can look this up in a manual but while people seem to be so quick and helpful on here does anyone know exact amounts of how much of each fluid I'll need to put back into it?

I suggest you go to Bass Cliff's website and read about the various subjects - this will put you in the ball park quantity wise and give you lots of good information.

Exact amounts are rather easy to determine.

Engine oil: put oil in until it gets to the top of the view window on the clutch cover.

Secondary drive oil: manual recommends filling until it comes out the access port on the side, then put the screw back in the access port.

Final drive: manual recommends filling until it reaches the bottom of the fill port.

 Oh, you wanted numbers?
Engine: just over 3 quarts if you don't change the filter, but since you always change the filter, 4 quarts.

Secondary drive: I don't have a manual handy, but it's not much, maybe 8 ounces?

Final drive: again, not much, but about 12 ounces here. Good news is that it's the same stuff that's used for the secondary drive, so just get a quart and have some left over.
