I have a few dollars in the bank (not much), and the banks aren't paying squat in interest these days. But where are you going to put a few thousand these days and expect to get a reasonable return? Stocks and mutual funds? Talk about gambling! Real estate? I don't have that much, and with all the foreclosures, it's going to be a while until that market returns to anything resembling normalcy.
But I've always done well with older bikes, so long as you don't pay too much for them up front or crash them... And I do have a very big garage - the main feature that attracted me to this house in the first place.
And in bikes, I have fun with my investments. What can you do with gold bars, old coins, or baseball cards? I can take a bike like a CBX for a ride, to a show, to any local event or watering hole, and immediately have any number of folks want to strike up a conversation. Or I can just go for a ride in the country and be alone with my thoughts...
And I have proven in the past (such as one time when I was in Florida some years back when I was a thousand miles from home and had two vehicles, my van and an '81 CBX, that, should I need the cash, I can post an ad online and sell the CBX the very next day for more than I paid for it.
And until that time comes, I get to ride a true classic.
Plus, your theory wouldn't work because I have three of these little Mitsu-Dodge twucks!Last edited by Guest; 08-31-2008, 12:10 PM.

HighMileage,
I don't disagree with you, but I found myself buying 2 classic GS1100"s in the last year for great prices and then still looking for more 1100's on CraigsList that I could scoff up. I can fit over 20 full size bikes in my 2 car garage and 2 story barn and still have room to walk around. I would feel the need to register and USE the bikes on a weekly rotation, and keep them all up to snuff maintenance wise, but you would reach a point of saturation and diminishing returns.
So I stopped cold turkey(I think?) and am selling the ES now. OK, the real reason is that I can't help but exercise the ES beyond acceptable legal limits.
But it sounds like you're too far gone....BTW what is the ticker symbol for old classic bikes?

Actually, I only keep two or three registered and insured at a time. These are the bikes that I ride most often.
But you know what? Those tags fit the other bikes quite well, too, for the rare occasion when I want to take them for a short ride...
A few of these bikes are not ridden at all, such as the '77 Gold Wing, which was nice a barn find with just 9900 miles on it. Both it and the project CBX above are long term projects.
