chain tensile strength
literally speaking, what would be a decent tensile strength for a GS1000 that is daily driven, not driven hard or drag raced? ive seen chains ranging from high 6000s to 11000s and dont want to overkill. chain wear is not an issue. i dont want to have to sell a kidney for a new chain. but i dont want a cracked case if i can help it.Tags: None

Many people convert to a 530 chain when replacement time comes. Modern 530's are more than strong enough. Not sure what the tensile strength is but the RK XSO line is very good and reasonably priced. It's not worth spending more. Z1 Enterprises sells chains and sprockets, or maw has good prices on RK chains.
Good luck.Ed

why do oring/xring chains have higher tensile strength than standard chains? im wanting to use a non o/x ring chain, but all im seeing is chains in the 6000-8000 range, and im not sure thats stout enough.

RK 530 XSO chains (X-ring type) have 9500 lb tensile strengh. http://www.rkexcelamerica.com/rk_cha...25_530xso.html

There are cheaper places to buy the parts but these guys know what you need in terms of an offset sprocket spacer if you go with a 530. They sell 630 as well. If you want to price search try googling "RK XSO chain"Ed

im trying to go 520, not 530. all of the 520 standard chains ive seen are 6000-8000 tensile strength.
i do not want an xring/oring chain unless i have to have one to get adequate tensile strength.

Why do you want a 520 chain? 520 is narrower than 530 so the sprockets will wear faster. No advantage to 520 other than being slightly lighter. Also, I've read here that 520 sprockets in sizes for our GS bikes can be hard to find - no personal experience on this so not sure if it's true. Have you researched this yet and found a source? Last thing is that non O-ring chains are primarily targeted at the low cost market segment thus these chains are typically not as strong as the higher grade chains with O-rings. Not sure you are going to be able to find a non O-ring chain that meets your needs.

i have done the research and found 520 sprockets that fit the GS1000, as well as sourced 520 non-oring chains, the only problem, and the initial question, was what is the target tensile strength? i have sourced an RK standard chain with a tensile strength of 6800 and a few other brands of standard in the 7500 range.

thank you for that. makes me feel better.
FWIW, what chain did you buy?

but that is just it, a 520 is not engineered to fit a GS1000. a GS comes with a 630, a popular upgrade is a 530, and im looking to go 520 for a custom application.
i guess a better way to get an answer would be to ask this question:
is a chain tensile strength of 6800 enough for a GS1000?

that is what spawned this debate we are having. well, that and the fact im wanting to go 520.

why bother going to a 520 if you cant decide whether or not it will stand the power, like you say, its hard to source a 520 kit and will wear out a lot quicker.
makes sense to stick with a 530 conversion and stick with the norm. at least replacements are readily available.1978 GS1085.
