Piston Ring Size Between 78 & 79 GS1000

Is the piston ring size the same from 1978 to 1979 for the GS1000 with a stock bore? Here is the link for the ebay auction.

They're the same size for all the 8 valve head 1000s.

That part number is 1mm oversize for a 1979 850, not for a 1000.

Check and compare the part numbers -- don't trust the goobers on eBay:

I tried both of the links, and was not able to find any kind of part numbers. These are not for a 1000 at all?

Whaddya mean you couldn't find part numbers?

On both sites, just navigate to your model motorcycle and look for the fiche with the pistons -- I think they're usually part of the crankshaft fiche. There will be two or three listings for piston rings -- standard, 0.5mm oversize, and 1.0mm oversize.

If you need a cross-reference, you can also punch in Suzuki part numbers here (on the right side of the page) and see all the models they fit:

So anyway, it appears that these are standard size rings for any 8-valve GS1000, including the earlier chain-drive models and the 1980-81 GS1000G/GL.

As it happens, they are ALSO 1.0mm oversize rings for the GS850.

I just checked Alpha Sports and PN:12140-49001-000 equates to a standard ring for the 8 valve GS1000 with a bore of 70mm. The last three digits are the ring size 000=standard, 050= 0.5 over, and 100= 1.0 over. The confusion is where the GS850 has a bore of 69mm so the standard ring for a GS1000 is actually the same as the +1 ring for the GS850 thus GS850 part number is actually the GS1000 number but they dropped the 000 suffix. I guess we learn somethin' new every day.

all correct
however, a 1000's standard pistons cant be used on the 850 as 1mm oversize as they have a larger size gudgeon pin
not that it maters for this thread though

The OEM rings are like $35 per piston ! Getting expensive That IS the correct part #
