so i took the top off the engine today ,the chain is still intact and in good condition, the tensioner looks like a right pain to get too,and there is only 1 forward guide(does it need a rear one).

This may help with some of your cam chain difficulties. But, without know ing what bike you have............

Please go to the User CP ( upper left of this screen) and edit your signature to include what bike you have. That way you won't have to type it in everytime and noone will ask you again.

Worst case is you have a bunch of bent valves when the cam chain jumped the cam sprockets and the valves hit the pistons. Best case is there is nothing wrong with the engine.

Why in the world would you purchase such an engine?

          First, see what you have.
See if the timing marks still line up correctly.
Look here, see if any parts are missing:

Look in the spark plug holes at the top of the pistons, are they marked at all from hitting the valves?
If you have to remove the cylinder head to see what's wrong, do it, it's easy.
Download a manual first if you don't have one, so you can recognize something wrong when you see it.
