    fit a gs550e motor in a 77 550 frame?

Hi all. I have a really quick question. Will a GS550E motor fit into a 77 gs550 frame? I have a PO of the bike I got with a low mileage gs550e motor he wants to get rid of for a $100. My bike is not running right, and I believe the carbs need synced and an air filter placed in it. I was going to replace the electronic ignition with a dyno S at some point, and he mentions that the gs550e came with an electric ignition, so he was going to at some point, swap motors instead of getting the dyno s.

All the first generation GS550 engines are basically the same and should interchange. The carbs changed, the kick starter was dropped, and electronic ignition started in 1980, but as long as you have the right carbs and ignition hook up the engine should be a simple bolt in.

Oh, I forgot to ask, say nothing was wrong with engine that is currently in my 77 550, could I replace possible failing parts in the future (such as transmission, ect...) instead of swapping/ aka are mechanical parts interchangeable other that the ignition system?

Most of the internal parts will interchange but not all. Changing internal engine parts are typically not needed on these GS bikes other than simple things like clutch plates, stators, and seals.
