throttle free play..what does that mean?

can someone describe what exactly that means? the manual say merely to allow 1 to 2 millimeters, but i have no clue where i am even supposed to be looking.

Freeplay just means the throttle cable is a little slack - you can turn the throttle a small amount before the butterflys open. Adjust so there is enough freeplay such that you can turn the handlebars full lock to lock and the engine does not rev up.

On the throttle cable, you will find an adjuster at each end. Each adjuster is callled a barrel adjuster. Turning either of them out/counterclockwise reduces slack in the cable. Commonly, cable slack is set/adjusted to leave about 2mm of slack for freeplay so the throttle can rest on the stop on the carb throttle cable bracket when the throttle is full off. You dont want excess slack in the throttle cable. Its difficult to shift smoothly, or even ride smoothly if you dont know exactly when the throttle will advance after you twist the handlebar grip.

This has nothing to do with the engine reving up in cases of the handlebars being turned lock to lock. That is a case of incorrect cable routing or binding/pinching.

I usually do about half of the needed adjustment at the carb hookup end and then the final, fine tuning adjustment at the handlebar end.
You dont want either barrel adjuster set to its all the way out point.
