That's the cam chain tensioner.
Here are rebuild/resetting instructions to eliminate the leak. With pictures and part numbers, even:
1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
2005 KLR685, Aztec Pink - Turd II.3, the ReReReTurdening
2015 Yamaha FJ-09, Magma Red Power Corrupts...

If you dont hear loud rattle/knocking/slapping of the cam chain then no need to touch it. If it is set properly (as described well in bwringers tutorial) then it works fine last a long time.
Now there are a couple oil seals in the thing, so if you get oil dripping from that knob or from its base, then you might have want to take it apart. Otherwize, works fine, last a long time.
