    Intake Boots

Saw this ad on e-bay for a NOS set of intake boots that would fit my '79 GS1000S.

I checked the fiche and this is a new part number but it says that it would fit. My current boots have vacuum fittings on them and there is a vacuum line on the #2 boot that goes to the petcock. These parts don't have vacuum fittings.

I'd like to pick up some new, pliable boots on the cheap if I can, but I don't know if vacuum fittings can be added to rubber parts after the fact. Has anyone run across this before?

    Thanks.

8V 1000 engines have screws on the head to install the vacuum fittings. The rubber carb boots are smooth with out any ports or fittings. Some people install Kawasaki intake boots which have a vacuum nipple molded in. Maybe you have some of those already and the stock boots are throwing you off?

Sure enough, that is what I have. They look to cost more than double to replace versus the Suzuki OEM parts. Where would I find the screws on the head you mentioned above on the fiche? I guess that the Kawasaki boots would make it easier to synch the carbs regularly?

      Appreciate the insight mate! Thanks.

The OE Suzuki boots are more expensive than the aftermarket Kawasaki boots based on prices I’ve seen. Regarding the screws on the intake port, what do you have in there now? Stock screw is simple socket head screw with washer to seal. Nothing special there.

The Kaw boots were $65 each on Z1. Pro Motion had OEM Suzuki boots for about $25 each. When I thought about it, the OEM boots are set up for 28mm carbs. The Kaw boots are set up for 29MM smoothbores. As crazy as that sounds, I ordered the Kaw boots. I don't want to force the carbs into the boots. I sure that they would stretch 1MM, but I'm new enough at this to take very few chances.

          Thanks for the advice.

Those Kawasaki boots on Z1 are $65 for a set of 4.

The OE Suzuki boots are $22.88 each from Flatoutmotorcycles.com

Thank you. Hopefully, I can change my order. I don't need 16 of them.

                ummmmmm,

The 28 and 29 is an internal dimension. The 26, 28, and 29 vm carbs all have the same extenal dimension. Also, I doubt the Kaw boots will line up as well with the port as the Suzukis will.

These boots on ebay seem big, like for CV carbs. That would cover the 80 GS1000, but would be wrong for the 77-79 GS750 and 78-79 GS1000.

I have the Kaw boots now and the carbs fit the boots well. I checked the part number on the ebay listing and it was the same as the fiche, although it was a "replaced by" number. I'll try the Kaw boots first and hope for the best.

Thanks for the info on internal/external dimensions. As is obvious, I have a lot to learn.

                  Cheers!

Just a follow-up. I got the Kawasaki boots. They lined up to the ports okay, but the holes to bolt them on didn't align. I ended up having to drill those holes out slightly to get them to fit. Cleaned and synched the carbs and it is running way better now than it has since I got it a year ago. Interesting though, the Kaw boots don't use an o-ring. However, the vacuum seal seems good and the synch is still dead on after 200+ miles.

The plugs look fine after chops at idle, mid-range and WOT. I used a Colortune to set the idle and the spark looks good, but the idle is still a little rough at 1200 rpm. Would this be an indication that the PO played with the cam?

Thanks to all for the advice and guidance.
