New sprockets and chain

I may be replacing my chain and sprockets. Any recommendations on what to buy, and where?

Should I go o-ring or no?

How do I know what size to order for chain and sprockets?

My current chain is an RK 630 SO.

530 chain and sprockets is a popular conversion if your current chain is shot. Z1 Enterprises sells RK X-ring chains and can hook you up with everything you need.

If you are not sure about your current chain, you can measure it for elongation and judge accordingly. Not sure about the exact measurement process off the top of my head, but if you search around it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Something just doesn't seem right with my current chain. For one, it seems really loud and clank (even though I am pretty good at adjusting it).

The other thing is that it flexes unevenly. It is much looser in parts and tighter in others.

I have no idea how old it is. My guess is the po never replaced it. I would like to have a baseline with the chain and sprockets.

I say get a 630 O Ring chain and steel sprockets.

all chain develops a tight spot and that is where your slack adjustment is made.

the oring will be quieter than than standard chain.

you dont need to lube a o ring chain -- you have to keep it clean

o rings only stretch after installation and then set for long life

630 is the big papa of chain and last nearly forever!!

All chains need lubrication, even O-ring type. The chain has lubrication sealed inside but the rollers and sprockets still need lubrication since there is metal to metal contact occuring.

I’m a bicyclist, as well as motorcyclist, thus I spend a lot of time on the road pedaling. On a modern motorcycle, with stock mufflers intact, I can always tell when a motorcycle has a neglected chain – the chain noise far exceeds engine/exhaust noise for normal running around town. A quick sprits’ with chain lube keeps the rollers and sprockets lubricated which makes for a far quieter drivetrain.

So how can I really tell if the chain and sprockets need replacing?

I know I have one area (like I said) that is really slacking and other parts of the chain that are tighter.

It seems like the chain (even well adjusted---wheel properly centered) still makes a fair amount of noise and kind of moves unevenly (ie. up and down and not steady) as the wheel turns.

If you can lift the chain off the rear sprocket its probably due to be replaced.

Id call over to Leos and see what they carry and how much. Then call Bike Bandit and Dennis Kirk. I think I got a Tsubaki from DK. Its been a few years and I dont have many miles on it. Maybe one of these road warriors around here have some input....
