I'm replacing the carb boots on my '81 650G as part of a minor overhaul and major cleanup project this year. When I removed the original factory-installed boots I found traces of a beige kind of rubbery goop left on the separated surfaces. I was not planning to add anything but the new O rings to seal the surfaces. Does anyone know what this sealant material is? I'm assuming now that I should replace it in the installation of the new boots.

No sealing goop with new O-rings. A little silicone grease does help hold the o-ring in place during installation though.Ed

Hi Mr. Flaggo60,
As far as I know, there should not be any type of sealant used between the carb boots and the head. That's what the new O-rings are for.
I think manual might suggest some type of thread lock for the screws, but that's it.
