    1980 550L cam chain tentioner

Can this be removed and the seals replaced without removing the carbs(hate removing the carbs)?

Yes, but you will have more room to see what is going on if you do remove them. Much easier also if the tank off. After the fourth time the carbs are off its a snap.

      Hi Mr. machinest,

I agree. It's possible, but much easier with the carbs and airbox removed. Have you seen this? http://www.bwringer.com/gs/camchaintens.html

      Thank you for your indulgence,

I'm not sure if there is enough room on a 550 to do that.

I have pulled the carbs on a 550 a couple of times, but never tried removing the cam chain tensioner, so you will have to trust someone who has actually done it.

On the other hand, I have been staying in a Holiday Inn Express for the last four weeks,
so I should probably know everything about everything by now.

Leaving in a few minutes for home, but there is a nice storm moving through. Might wait a bit.
I am in Greenville, headed for Memphis, then northeast to oHIo. Storm is moving directly east.

If you can do it, I give you props.

It would be VERY difficult without pulling the carbs.

Those CCT bolts have a tendancy to sieze as well.
