plz help ...bike surges when throttle
heres me situation.. i got a 1983 gs1100 ,so i began to tinker with it due to harness was spaghetti and all over the place. since then i rewired the bike, and cleaned out the carbs by soaking them in diesel fuel and making sure all o rings and plastic and rubber parts were cleaned with degreaser and now the bike fires up well . then came to find out the petcock would constantly drip gas whether on the on,reserve, and prime position. i drove the bike around the block and shes a beast and runs excellent . now i see why these bikes are used for race engines.. although i have a busa , i still think this bike is one of those must have bikes due to its power, anyhow i came on the boards and was informed my petcock needs replacing due to it should not constantly give gas while the bike is not running and that my cranckase is prolly full of gas mix with my oil..so i checked that and indeed it was , so then i replaced my oil and replaced the petcock..now everything is working fine, i checked the petcock and now it only drips fuel while the bike is running. so got that solved...now i go and fire my bike ...it always starts in one push of the button,,and idles well 1k. so i go to test drive it and i twist the throttle and the bike surges and does not want to go anywhere? am i running lean, because it was running fine before when i had a bad petcock which was constantly giving out fuel..also like to mentioin that i lost one of the main jets #4 but replaced it with a gsxr 1100 main jet. but i dont think thats the problem since it was running and driving with it when i had a bad petcock. what should i check for next? thanks communityLast edited by Guest; 10-25-2008, 01:27 PM.Tags: None

It might have run well before because of the extra fuel in the float bowls. Now that the float valves have a chance to do their job, you are most certainly running leaner, maybe even too lean. Check your float levels to make sure they are proper.

Make sure the mechanical ignition advance is not sticking. It's on the right side under the round ignition cover.
Did you do a valve clearance adjustment? These 16 valves are a snap.
Are you running the stock airbox? Stock pipes? Any mods?1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

thanks for the responses..i pulled all 4 plugs...and they were whiter than usual..i concluded it was running way too lean...therefore i opened my 4 pilot mixture screws 1 turn more and the bike runs excellent ..all lot of guessing and hards days work...but its all worth it at the end of the day......Vroom Vrooom..thanks community
