How to replace tacho drive oil seal in a 79 GS1000S

I'm sure I've seen a "how to" that explains how to replace the tachometer drive oil seal somewhere on this site, but do you think I can find it now that I have the seal and I am ready to do the job...

Any help finding this would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Ian

Remove the tacho cable from where it goes into the head.Undo the screw that holds the drive into the head and pull it out.Fit the new o'ring and put it back together. If you gooogle 'alpha sports',go to motorcycle diagrams and you'll find exploded parts diagrams for the entire bike.Very handy.Have you got one of these?Cheers,Simon.

Thanks Simon - it's the "pull it out of the head" that has caused me to pause - it appears to be tight and I didn't want to break anything.

Yes I have one too, but I've yet to get the paint job redone.

      Yours looks brand new!

      Regards

I've got to replace the same seal on my GK. Where is the cheapest place to get it that, more than likely has it in stock?
Thanks for reposting the link to the tutorial and especially to the guy that took the time to compile such a great tutorial. Top notch!

Common sense has become so uncommon that I consider it a super power.

            Present Stable includes:
            '74 GT750 Resto-mod I've owned since '79
            '83 GS1100E (The best E I've ever enjoyed, Joe Nardy's former bike)

Also not that there are two seals involved there (at least there is on 850G and 1100GK). One seal around the spinning spindle, and one seal around the housing that goes into the cam cover.

I just mention that so when you are looking at parts diagram (fische, whatever) you get the right one that is leaking. OR I suggest getting both.
