750gsx.float bowls
g'day y'all.ive got a carby question. My 80 gsx[yep,an aussie]750 has cv's and my fuel levels are all over the place. My floats are all correct height.PLEASE, can someone tell me the float bowl quantity! My manual states float height22.4 and fuel level5.0+-0.5 but i dont get it.This can not mean 5.0mm[and in any case i dont have one of those dinky little do-dads that allow me to fit a fuel level gauge to float bowl]At this stage I am draining them into measuring cup[yep the first one includes the fuel line]Perhaps someone has an easy way to create a measuring gauge.Ta.Last edited by Guest; 11-01-2008, 01:46 AM. -
if your floats are at the specified height then you should have no problems with fuel level
the other measurement refers to the fuel level height above the float bowl edge, when measured using a clear line attached to the float bowl drain plug
you can manufacture such a gauge yourself, i.e. drill through a bolt of the appropriate size and epoxy a piece of clear tube to itLast edited by psyguy; 11-01-2008, 03:41 AM.GS850GT

thanks psyguy. But i do have a problem and they are all at the same height.I had an FZ750 that did the same thing, that is;needing the floats at different levels to get the fuel levels correct.Mind you it was easy to check the fuel level on the FZ as the carbs were built to allow it even having a line on the outside of the bowl.I would have made a gauge but i dont have a drain plug to use.I live in the bush [the country-side to you] so its not all that close to the next bike shop.So you say 5.0 above the edge of the bowl.I will make a gauge and try that.In my manual there is even a gauge listed as a factory tool but i can not find directions for its use.On my bike 12and4 are all withintwo or three mm of each other but 3 is about 7mm lowerI want it PERFECT.Thanks for any help.I will keep you posted.TA

check out this site:
you can download a manual - may be different to what you have and may have a better illustration of the carburettor fuel level gauge
btw, the factory tolerance for the difference in the fuel level is under 1mm so it sounds like you need further adjustment to all four carbs
if you indeed get varied fuel levels while the floats are on the same heights, i would suspect faulty floats and/or float valves and/or float return springsGS850GT

gsx750 floatbowl
Hi Psyguy. And thanks.I cant cop a trick!Im using an Apple and it wont download a 'pdf' file.Mind you i know less about computers than ,carbs!!!!!!Oh yeah, yous a kiwi, cool!!!Today i will make a gauge out of one of my plugs and weld the hole up afterward. For the time being i will bring 1 3and 4 to the level of #2 as it has the best looking plug. And its the mean average. The manual that i have is the factory item.

Correction
mate, i got it wrong
the carb fuel level has to be set at 4.5-5.5mm BELOW the carb fuel bowl and carb body mating surface
the level is measured with the engine running
(i just went to double check in the factory manual for my bike...)
sorry for the wrong interpretation earlier onGS850GT

The float measurement is from the gasket surface WITHOUT the gasket
make sure you checked it correctly

Hi again psyguy.Yeah, this is good!Imade a gauge yesterday and set bowls, incorrectly,to a mean average which turned out to be 8.5 mm from the mating surface. And im sorry to make the point[but i still will]my floats are now set at 23.5.But it has to be said that they are the same, but still low!!!!So out they come again and so it go's.And thank to the sqdancer as well ,I am measuring from the correct surface. In any case I need to strip them down again as I noticed yesterday, after they were refitted, that a tube i had used to blow them out had some gunk in it which i have to assume is now in them.....'these trial are sent to thing us'....TA

as you decrease the float height the fuel level will actually increase - so, in the end you may find that the spec of 22.4mm on the floats indeed corresponds to the fuel level of 5mm below the gasket surface
any variation i would say would be due to the settlemet of the float valve springsGS850GT
